Below you’ll find what a sabbatical costs per month, and what to budget for the two most common lengths — three months and six months — using the real numbers we tracked on our own trip.
The short answer
On a typical mixed route, a sabbatical costs roughly €2,000–€2,500 per month once everything is counted. That works out to around €9,000–€12,000 for three months and €16,000–€20,000 for six per person. Stay in cheaper regions and it’s far less; head somewhere like Australia and it’s more.
How much does a sabbatical cost per month?
Per-month spending is the foundation, because everything else is just multiples of it. On the road, a comfortable mid-range budget runs from around €1,400 a month in cheaper parts of Southeast Asia to €4,800 a month in a high-cost country like Australia. Across our own mixed route, the blended average came to about €2,300 per person, per month — covering accommodation, food, local transport and activities.
One thing to know before you multiply: the one-off costs — long-haul flights, insurance, gear — don’t scale with time. They hit a one-month trip just as hard as a six-month one, which is why short sabbaticals cost more per month than long ones.
How much does a 3-month sabbatical cost?
Three months is the most popular sabbatical length — long enough to truly switch off, short enough to fund and to negotiate at work. On a mixed route, budget roughly €9,000–€12,000 per person , all in. A Southeast-Asia-focused three months can come in around €6,000–€8,500 ; a trip built around pricier regions like Australia or Western Europe climbs to €15,000–€18,000 . The on-the-road portion is roughly three times your monthly figure; the rest is the fixed costs that any trip carries.
How much does a 6-month sabbatical cost?
Six months is the classic “proper” sabbatical. On a blended Southeast Asia and Australia route — which is what we did — the six months on the road came to about €13,800 per person , and roughly €16,000–€20,000 all in once flights, insurance and a buffer are added. Skip the expensive countries and stay mostly in Southeast Asia, and the same six months can land closer to €12,000–€14,000 . Travelling as a couple who share a room brings the per-person number down further.

Whatever the length, the cost comes from four buckets — and forgetting one is what blows budgets:
